Explore Major Asphalt Roofing Shingle Products
There are three major categories of asphalt roofing shingle products available today:
- 1. Strip Shingles/3 Tab Shingles: Royal Sovereign
- 2. Dimensional Shingles/Architectural Shingles: Timberline HDZ
- 3. Luxury Shingles: Grand Canyon, Camelot, Slate line, Grand Sequoia,
Also, a very important classification of shingle is a class 4 impact-resistant shingle. This shingle can come in all 3 categories above, and we highly recommend having the shingle of your choice when it comes to protecting your home here in Colorado against hail damage. Many insurance companies offer policy premium discounts when this class 4 shingle is installed on your home, so check with your insurance company to see if you qualify.
The reason these class 4 shingles are different is in the material used to manufacture the product.
While each shingle manufacturer creates a product that is a little different, these shingles are typically made with polymer-modified asphalt. This is asphalt with a polymer added to it for increased performance. Many impact-resistant shingles are made with asphalt modified with styrene-butadiene-styrene or SBS. (styrene-butadiene-styrene), or SBS is a hard rubber that is used for products like the soles of shoes, tire treads, and other places where durability is important.
** Note: Class 3 shingles can withstand ice balls that are 1.75 inches in diameter. Class 4 shingles can withstand ice balls that are 2 inches in diameter.
